Straight out of the classical interview questions bag, “Where do you see yourself / want to be in 5 years”, this question is meant to see how you see yourself progressing and what your goals are and even what motivates you.

It is a question that gives the interviewer information about how you think and see yourself progressing in life.

Generally speaking answering here with “I see myself doing the same thing and not advance in any way” is a bad answer, BUT , you also don’t have to be super-duper motivated and ambitious either.

It really depends on the type of job you are applying to.

You can talk about your ambition to progress and get higher in the organisation. You can also talk about that you want to study for additional certificates and do extra courses to learn the field and topic on a deeper level and thus be a more valuable employee and addition to this organisation.

In most cases though try not to be dismissive of the job you are applying for!

Saying something like “I want to be doing something better or more important or meaningful than this starting position” is a big no no and will lead to you not getting the job at all. Making the interviewer feel like their position or job is meaningless (even though it might actually feel like it is) will only reflect badly on you and how you act towards other people.

Say instead that you see this position as a great place to learn and improve and get to know how the comp any operates and that hopefully it will allow you to develop and improve and give you opportunities to be a more integral part of the company and decision making in the future once you have proven yourself.

Conclusion: Be motivated, be respectful and know something about the company. Do not dismiss the role even though it might be an entry into the company and not a job you want to be doing for the rest of your life.
